Come and journey through the inspiring story of how the Catholic faith has taken root and flourished in Detroit. From the first French missionaries of the 1600s to the bustling parishes of today, we’ll explore the people and events that shaped our local Church through times of joy and challenge. Together we’ll discover how the Holy Spirit has guided Detroit Catholics in every generation and how Christ continues to lead us now. This course is perfect for anyone who loves our city, our faith, and the rich traditions that bring them together. Join us and be inspired to carry the mission forward in your own life!

 

How is this course structured?

This non-credit course is being offered online using the seminary's learning-management system, Canvas. Upon signing up for the course, students will receive a username and password for accessing the online class.

The class will be conducted online giving students the freedom to engage with the material and complete course tasks around their own schedule. The class will consist of five modules which can be completed according to the individual's own pace.

Each module will be hosted by Fr. Bryan Shackett and will
 include:

- Lecture Videos (~20 minutes)
- Lectio Divina Exercise (~10 minutes)
- Personal Assessment Quiz (~5 minutes)
- Supplemental Reading Material

The goal of the course is not to deliver a high level of rigor or stress, but instead engage Catholics who want to learn more about their faith.

Consider this a personal study or retreat experience, done at your own pace.  This is an opportunity to grow deeper in your relationship with the Lord and with others.

Fr. Bryan Shackett

Rev. Bryan Shackett earned an A.B. in Philosophy from Sacred Heart Major Seminary in 2010. He then earned an S.T.B. from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 2013. After completing his seminary formation at the Pontifical North American College, he was ordained a priest in 2014. He then earned an S.T.L. in Church History from the Pontifical Lateran University.

After his ordination to the priesthood in 2014, Fr. Shackett served as the Parochial Vicar at St. Paul on the Lake Parish in Grosse Pointe Farms, MI (2014). After he returned from studies having earned an S.T.L., Fr. Shackett served as the Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth, MI (2015-2016). He then served as the Parochial Vicar at St. Isaac Jogues Parish in St. Clair Shores, MI (2016-2019). During his time as the Parochial Vicar at St. Isaac Jogues, Fr. Shackett began serving as a member of the part-time faculty at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Fr. Shackett served as temporary Parochial Vicar at St. Lawrence Parish in Utica, MI (2019). In 2019, Fr. Shackett began his assignment as the Parochial Vicar at St. Thecla Parish in Clinton Township, MI. Fr. Shackett currently serves as Family-Parochial Vicar of the In Solidum Family of Parishes consisting of St. Thecla Parish, St. Paul of Tarsus Parish, St. Malachy Parish, and St. Ronald Parish. Fr. Shackett also continues to serve as a member of the part-time faculty of Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
